The Sullivans, a family of hard-working Irish lawyers, came from nothing and built a life they can be proud of. The Deschanels amassed incredible wealth by siding with the North during the Civil War, betraying their people. Both New Orleans families have a dark and rich history, painted with secrets, treachery, and colorful, supernatural abilities.

The House of Crimson and Clover unravels the mysteries surrounding both families, pulling us further into their tangled, enigmatic lives.

I'm not a huge fantasy or urban fantasy reader. I can indulge every blue moon but it's very rare I'll willingly pick up a book in this genre and want to continue reading more like it. Yet that was the case with this incredible collection.

Every story is unique. Not just because of the characters (although they do make appearances in every book) but because of the circumstances each character is in. And what a cast Ms. Cradit created! Each person is different, their thoughts, needs, desires, situations unique unto themselves. The alternating POVs helped me see into their minds, get to know each of them on a deeper level, watch the story unfold through their eyes as they (and I) took part in what was happening.

I went into reading this collection somewhat apprehensively. Fantasy, to me, is like sci-fi, which I adore. The author can get lost in world building that the core of the story gets lost. Maybe it's romance. Maybe it's action and adventure. Maybe it's coming of age. Whatever the reason for the story is, I want it to remain the focus even while the author works their magic and crafts the world it takes place in. Ms. Cradit executed that beautifully. The families and their shared history, conflicts and futures stayed firmly in focus for me, making it easy to appreciate everything else she wrote and created.

Even if you don't like fantasy/urban fantasy, I hope you try this collection. Intense, powerful, epic. I can't promise you won't be disappointed if you give it a try, but I can promise you I wasn't.
