An ancient warrior. A timeless battle.

Haven Killian needs help. As the heiress of an ancient organization called the Black Rose, she is charged with keeping alive the line of succession. When she vows to protect a young boy tormented by magic, all she has to go on are rumors of an immortal with the power to save him.

As Battle King of the Undying, Quinn Donovan has the most powerful magic on the planet. Yet, he has waited an eternity to find his lifebond: the one woman destined to be his mate. The moment he meets Haven, he senses she is his. His instincts scream to protect the woman and the boy she guards, and to claim her as his own. But Haven is mortal, and for them to be united, she must become one of the Undying.

Understanding the Undying world took a bit of time. I probably should have gone into this story expecting a lot of world-building--I hate to admit that I didn't--but I was anxious to meet the characters and find out what was it about them that had me wanting to read their story.

Quinn and Haven are the kinds of characters you've felt you've read about before then they aren't. Quinn might be Battle King of the Undying but he's an honest-to-God great guy. He's not an obnoxious holier-than-thou ass or an arrogant you-are-mine-and-that's-all-there-is-to-it prick. He knows Haven is meant to be his fated mate but his attraction to her runs deeper than instinct. He doesn't go all caveman on her, running her to ground while beating into her head that she is his. The sweetness I sensed in him comes to life as he protects her, gently persuades her that they are meant to be together for all time.

At the same time, Haven touches his heart and his soul, brings to life the parts of him that have faded into the background because of time and weariness. Two thousand years is a long time to walk this earth alone, much less without enduring the death Quinn's seen and the memories of those deaths that he bears. She challenges him as no one else has and isn't phased by the fact that he is a powerful immortal.

This isn't going to be a story for everyone. Right off the bat, the amount of world-building Ms. Weylin does will be a huge deterrent for some readers. But if you've got time and patience, I hope you take a chance on this story and give it a look, if not read it all the way through. It's a good beginning to this series. Hopefully, the books that follow will be even better.

Emma Weylin fell in love with the written word as a child. She loves to create her own worlds full of magic and wonder. One of her favorite things is populating those worlds with interesting and true-to-life characters who experience everything from epic love and heartrending battles to seriously silly or embarrassing “duh” moments. She believes love can and does conquer all things. When she’s not writing, she enjoys her family and has a copious yarn addiction.
