In just twenty-seven short years, Alexa Sullivan Tate has already lost the two great loves of her life. One to the Army; the other in a tragic car accident. Two years after the latter, a ghost from the past reappears, igniting feelings in Alexa she’d thought long dormant.

Jace McAllister has spent the last ten years in the Army, defusing bomb after bomb, trying to forget the girl who once set his world on fire. For him, she’s always been the one who got away. After a not-so-chance encounter places her back in his line of sight, he’s locked eyes on target, and won’t let her go without a fight.

Ten years ago their chemistry smoldered, and now the sparks threaten to light a fuse leading to an explosion between them even Jace can’t control. Not that he wants to. But when love has slipped through your fingertips before, how can you trust it will once again remain?

Will Alexa’s fear of love and loss destroy their second chance at a beautiful future before it can even begin?

Other books in this series

You ever read a story and all you're doing is silently begging one character to take that chance, to leap without looking, to trust that everything will be fine? That was me. That was this story.

Despite the steamy sex Jace and Alexa enjoy, this is a remarkably sweet story. Jace and Alexa have spent ten years apart. He, in the military. She, married and widowed. Meeting again after so long was...awkward. What do you say? What do you do? How do you react? That meeting was written beautifully. Even better was the attraction that smoldered than flared to life between them.

For me, this wasn't really about having a second chance with a first love. It was about letting go of your fear of being hurt again and taking a chance on what could be a very happy ending.

But I understood Alexa's fear. Her husband was taken from her too soon, too quickly, and the loss resonated from her soul. She didn't want to feel that way again. Didn't want to love if she was going to be left alone once more. Yet Jace was patient with her and she discovered how fulfilling it could be to follow her heart instead of ignoring it.

While the storyline is somewhat predictable, it was still incredibly enjoyable. I love Jace's patience. It's a trait I adore seeing in romance novels. It slows the story down, gives the characters a chance to grow and show more of who they are. They aren't superficial but real. They rediscovered one another and neither was willing to let the other go. The life they'd been denied years before was now theirs for the taking and their enjoyment.

Tessa is a twenty something book junkie who is also obsessed with sports. She works for the government during the day, hangs out with Air National Guard on the weekends, and has been married to her own book boyfriend for nine years. If she's not writing or looking through tons of photos of hot men, all in the name of research, then you can probably find her curled up with my Kindle, ignoring the rest of the world.
