Fresh off the heels of yet another bad relationship, Tristan Brewer is taking a break from men to try and figure out where he keeps going wrong. He knows his biggest fault—he leads with his heart, not his head—and that’s never going to change. But after several introspective weeks, he’s beginning to get a handle on things. That is, until badass heartthrob Alex Wells walks into his bar…
Alex has spent eight years in the Army, months in a hospital bed, and far too long hiding his sexual identity. He’s guilt-ridden, damaged, pissed off, and up for a Silver Star—for the incident that nearly cost him his life, and kept him from his grandmother’s funeral. But all he wants to do is forget his stint with the institution that allows but doesn’t necessarily accept, and live the life he’s always dreamed of.
The chemistry between Tristan and Alex ignites from the moment they meet, and the more time they spend together the hotter the flames become. But the closer Tristan gets, the more Alex’s walls go up, and when the two walk onto a military base, Tristan finds out Alex’s physical scars aren’t the ones that run the deepest.
I realize M/M romance isn't for everyone. Even in this day and age when homosexuals live fulfilling lives and have almost the same rights as heterosexuals, it's still a touchy subject. But one thing I would ask, if you choose to read this book, is to see it for what it is: love needed, love wanted, love discovered, love given.
As humans, we long for acceptance from our peers and family. Rejection stings. Demands to change rub us the wrong way, especially when who we are isn't a product of circumstance or environment but is, instead, innate to us. It's how our brains are wired, how our bodies respond, how our hearts feel. Is it wrong? Hm, to some. To others, the love between two people, regardless of gender, is as natural as breathing.
Such is the case of Tristan and Alex. Tristan might have declared, "I'm done!" after his ex left him hurting and lost but Alex was there to revive his faith in love and forever with The One. Tristan's scars are completely internal while Alex's are internal and external. Years of pretending to be someone he's not have steeled his resolve to be who he's born to be now. But old habits die hard. It takes the love and acceptance and patience of a special man to break Alex free from those habits.
This story moved rather quickly for me. The pace was very different from Ms. Foster's other LGBTQIA book in this series, Discovering Delilah. But Tristan's an old character in this series. His sexuality was revealed early on, so the pacing, in a way, made sense and it fit how quickly he and Alex fell in love. Their attraction and lust burned bright at the beginning. The friendship they built tore down the walls each had erected around their hearts. The love that grew between them ensured their relationship would last longer than a week, a month, a year. They found what they wanted, needed, deserved to have. Fast as it happened, it was satisfying to read their happy ending.
