When Sugar Pierce is asked to be her adopted sister’s Maid of Honor for her Christmas Eve wedding, she gladly steps into the role. As the only snow leopard in the wolf pack, she’d do anything for her adopted family.

Alpha lion Maddox Hayes is happy to stand up as Best Man for his only sibling’s marriage to a she-wolf. As alpha, he’s bound by pride laws to mate a lion female, but he’s never met one who makes his beast purr. When he enters the foyer to walk the Maid of Honor down the aisle, he comes face-to-face with the most beautiful woman he’s ever seen in his life. When she promptly shifts into a snow leopard, he knows that he’s in the presence of his true mate. Her uncontrollable shift is proof of that.

Maddox is eager to make Sugar his mate, even if it means relinquishing his position and power as alpha. As he prepares to step down as alpha, usurpers disregard the pride laws and attempt to take control, forcing Maddox to defend his people and his mate. Will the new couple get to spend their first Christmas together, or will their mating be over before it starts?

Other books in this series

There are consequences to taking a non-lion as a mate, and Maddox is completely aware of that. He's intent, at first, to mating only a lioness because of what he will lose if he doesn't. That changes when he meets Sugar. The shift he forces her to have, that instant connection between their souls, changes his perspective on what matters and what doesn't.

And when it comes down to it, the heart and fate will not be denied regardless of laws or challenges or expectations. Maddox has proven himself an honorable Alpha, and it's his pride who goes to bat against the council for him to remain their Alpha. Even when a challenge is thrown down, he meets it with honor and defeats his opponent.

I loved how the pride refused to accept the laws as they were. I liked that they challenged the status quo. It showed how much they cared for Maddox and how ready they were to accept the change fate sent their way. Short and quick, this story offers a different angle for shifter romances: that a shifter cannot shift unless they're in the presence of their true mate. It's an interesting concept and there are so many possibilities for stories and characters and pairings. I'll be watching for more of this series.

A Midwesterner by birth, R.E. spent much of her childhood rewriting her favorite books to include herself as the main character. Later, she graduated on to writing her own books after "retiring" from her day job as a secretary to become a stay-at-home mom.

When not playing with her kids, wrestling her dogs out the door, or cooking dinner for her family, you'll find her typing furiously and growling obscenities to the characters on the screen.

Her best-selling series The Wolf's Mate, Wiccan-Were-Bear, The Necklace Chronicles, Hyena Heat, Wilde Creek, and Ashland Pride are available now.

She hopes you enjoy her writing and she would love to hear from you.
