Family legacies are a curse!

Welcome to the Lost Souls ParaAgency, where agents work together to ensure the safety of humans and to prevent exposure of the paranormal community.

The Assignment—stop witches from creating magical chaos in the small town of Burberry, South Carolina.

There’s no dead body… yet. And there won’t be if Lex Dimas takes this assignment. Forced to take on the occasional paranormal case by his manipulative grandfather, he’d prefer to spend his days striking deals in the boardroom. Instead, he’s stuck in small town Burberry searching out witches who intend to harm the unsuspecting townspeople. Only, he doesn’t come upon a group of hateful witches—instead he finds a sweeter-than-peach-pie tea shop owner who wouldn’t harm anyone.

Amira Walker and her two sisters come from a long line of witches who harness the power of emotional manipulation. But the Walker girls aren’t interested in fulfilling their witchy destinies, much to the chagrin of their three powerful aunts. When Lex shows up, Amira mistakenly believes he's spelled by the aunts in a love match attempt. To her mixed delight and disappointment, she discovers he’s there to apprehend a paranormal villain.

As Burberry becomes a hotbed of magical activity, Lex is sure Amira’s youngest sister is to blame. It’ll be up to Amira to prove her sister’s innocence and help Lex find the true culprit. Can they survive malicious witchcraft and come together as a paranormal investigative team before it’s too late?

A family curse, meddling aunts, a hot paranormal agent, and an unknown villain made this a fun read. Since I'm not quite sure what a cozy mystery is (I'm assuming it means no violence, lol) I'll have to agree with the cozy part. And the mystery part of course because Ms. Waller kept the villain so well hidden that the reveal was truly a surprise.

Lex is a love/hate character for me. I love him because he's the hero, he's good at his job--both of them--but I hate his persistence and insistence that Amira's sister is guilty on sight. Yes, the evidence is stacked against her so his conclusion makes sense. But there was this overwhelming feeling he didn't want to really investigate deeper because he didn't want to be in Burberry in the first place.

Thank God for sisters, right? Regardless of what was said, of the evidence presented, Amira refused to believe her sister was to blame. She understood Lex's stance but she wasn't about to let her sister go without a fight. Her determination is something to be admired, and Lex was smart enough to acknowledge that, even if he did so begrudgingly.

I've never read anything by Ms. Waller. This was an impulse buy for me, and, man, am I glad I took a chance. This opener for the series is engaging without dragging on and on and on. The violence is magical, the mystery buried beneath layers that are peeled back slowly. The evidence points in different directions at first then, as those layers are peeled away, narrows to the unexpected. And I do mean unexpected.

In the background, Ms. Waller builds the attraction and relationship between Lex and Amira. It brings Lex to a crossroads--duty or heart--and creates beautiful tension between them as they seek justice while cherishing their newfound feelings for one another and family. Ms. Waller does a terrific job balancing romance and mystery and suspense, then delivering equally terrific and satisfying ending. I enjoyed every word of this story and can't wait to read the next in this series.

K.M. Waller aka Kizzie Waller lives in Florida with her husband, two kids, and geriatric cat (seriously he's 19!). When she's not reading, writing, or chasing her kids around the house, she's binging television dramas and mysteries.
