He believes he can’t be saved—she’ll prove him wrong!

Former SEAL Gavin Savitt always knew who he was—until his last deployment ended tragically. Now he’s home, his mind hijacked by trauma and the shadow of his once-perfect sight. Yet in this new hazy, unclear world, one person stands out—Mavis Bracken.

There are a million reasons why Gavin shouldn’t be with Mavis, including that she’s his best friend’s little sister. Yet he longs for her touch, her freckles and her special way with wild, skittish beasts like him. He just needs the courage to take his life back. And Mavis won’t let him give up without a fight.

Mavis is everything Gavin is: persistent, stubborn, loyal. While she's pushing further into him though, he's doing his best to keep her at arm's length. It's an amusing tug-o-war, and it's only a matter of time to see if he gives in or she gives up.

Mavis isn't a quitter, and Gavin needs someone like her to remind him that he's more than his past, his injuries, his mental health. He's a man, strong and rock steady, fierce and wholeheartedly loyal, completely deserving of a life filled with love, laughter, happiness, and completion. He just needed the right woman to make him see and reach for it.

There were moments here and there when it felt like being together wasn't going to happen. Gavin's habit of retreat, retreat, retreat, was his coping mechanism against anyone who tried to get close, and it was both frustrating and disheartening to watch him choose that over Mavis. It didn't stop Mavis from trying and succeeding where others had tried and failed to reach him. That made all of the earlier disappointment I felt worth experiencing.

I believe this is the third book I've read by Ms. Williams, and I've come to expect a great deal of emotional upheaval and comfort from her books. I like the roller coaster she takes me on, the highs and lows of the characters struggling to meet in the middle, and the ultimate elation that comes with climbing that last hurdle and falling into a forever kind of love and a promise of a life they never dreamed of before. Gavin and Mavis are beautifully complex and real characters, and their story does them justice.
